Trade Facilitation

Trade facilitations are referred to a specific set of measures that simplifies the strict formalities and procedures for goods and products when they enter or leave a country with aim to be traded internationally. The primary aim of trade facilitation is to help make trade across borders (imports and exports) faster, and cheaper and more predictable, whilst ensuring its safety and security.

Why is it so important?

The trade facilitation scheme favours the government, public, and private entities. Some of the importance are:

  1. Resources will be managed properly and there will be an increase in trader compliance.
  2.  A more efficient and transparent delivery of public services will allow the administration to maintain high security levels and effective government control, while diminishing opportunities for corruption.
  3. Traders will gain in terms of higher predictability and speed of operations and lower transaction costs, resulting in more competitive exports on global markets.
  4. Trade facilitation measures can particularly benefit developing countries like Nigeria, where it frequently takes three times as many days to export goods as it does in developed ones.
